ServersA FiveM server artifact is the build of the server program (FXServer) that your server runs, and updating it is a download and replace job. This guide covers which build to pick, how to update on Windows and Linux, what changes with txAdmin and a rented server, and what to do if an update breaks the server.
What are FiveM server artifacts?
A FiveM server artifact is a package with the files needed to run or update your FiveM or RedM server. Cfx.re's docs describe it that way: you download an artifact to create a new server, or a newer one to update an existing server. Each artifact has a build number, like build 38317, the Recommended build on 5 November 2026.
The package is named by platform and operating system, and the Enhanced package is separate from the standard one:
| Platform | Windows | Linux |
|---|---|---|
| FiveM and RedM | server.7z | fx.tar.xz |
| FiveM for GTA V Enhanced | cfx-server_win_x64 | cfx-server-linux_x64 |
The Enhanced onboarding guide (opens in a new tab) covers the Enhanced server files, and What's changed in FiveM for GTA V Enhanced (opens in a new tab) lists the differences. Everything below uses the standard FiveM and RedM package.
Recommended, latest or optional: what each build means
Cfx.re's download page offers two update branches: Recommended and Latest. Recommended is the build its setup guides tell you to download, and Latest is the newest one. Some guides also mention an optional build, but the current download page doesn't list one.
| Branch | What it is | Support | Build on 5 November 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recommended | The build Cfx.re's setup guides tell you to download for a new server | Supported until six weeks after the next release in line | 38317 |
| Latest | The newest build. The docs name it as the way to get more than 48 slots | Supported until two weeks after the next release in line | 38343 |
| Optional | Mentioned in Cfx.re's support-timeline example. The current download page has no optional branch | Not listed | None |
The build numbers are what the Server Download page (opens in a new tab) showed on 5 November 2026 for FiveM and RedM, on Windows and Linux. They change with every release, so check the page. The support rules are on Cfx.re's end of support page (opens in a new tab).
Which FiveM server artifact should you pick?
Pick Recommended for a new server, because Cfx.re's setup guides tell you to download it. Pick Latest when you need something only newer builds have, such as more than 48 player slots. Whichever you pick, plan to move up before its support runs out.
- A new server: the Recommended build, as in the txAdmin (opens in a new tab) and vanilla (opens in a new tab) setup guides.
- More than 48 slots: the Latest build, with an Element Club plan of Argentum or above and a higher
sv_maxclients, as the server issues page (opens in a new tab) explains. The tiers are in How to add custom clothing to your FiveM server. - GTA V Enhanced: the Enhanced package, which needs the Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable on Windows.
- A server with a support warning: update now, see the next section.

When do you have to update?
Update when Cfx.re shows an end-of-support (gray) or end-of-life (red) warning for your server. Outdated artifacts keep running, but Cfx.re doesn't support them, and unsupported builds older than three months can't be joined from the server browser. Treat the gray warning as your cue, because it already means support has ended.
How to update FiveM server artifacts on Windows and Linux
To update, stop the server, download the build you chose from Cfx.re's Server Download page, extract it into a fresh server folder, and start the server again with the same command. Your server-data folder with server.cfg and resources stays where it is. The steps show Windows and Linux.
Stop the server, then rename the server files folder so you can go back to it. This step is our advice, not part of Cfx.re's docs. Leave the server-data folder alone.
:: In a Command Prompt: keep the old files, make an empty folder for the new buildcd /d C:\FXServerren server server-oldmkdir server# In a shell: keep the old files, make an empty folder for the new buildcd ~/FXServermv server server-oldmkdir -p serverOpen the Server Download page (opens in a new tab), choose FiveM and RedM, your operating system and the Recommended or Latest branch, and download it. On Linux, copy the link and fetch it with wget.
On Windows, open server.7z with a tool such as 7-Zip or WinRAR and extract it into C:\FXServer\server. On Linux you need the xz-utils package, then:
# Copy the Linux link from the Server Download page, then:cd ~/FXServer/serverwget <url>tar xf fx.tar.xzIf you run txAdmin, check whether its txData folder was inside the old server folder, and copy it into the new one if so.
Run the same command you ran before. These two come from Cfx.re's setup guides, and both start from the server-data folder.
cd /d C:\FXServer\server-dataC:\FXServer\server\FXServer.exe +exec server.cfgcd ~/FXServer/server-data && bash ~/FXServer/server/run.sh +exec server.cfgWatch the console for errors while the resources start, then press F8 in the game and connect. You can also open http://ip:port/info.json with your server's address, which returns the server's info if it is running.
All steps done.
Cfx.re's vanilla setup guide (opens in a new tab) has the full first-time setup, and it says the Linux version is a courtesy port.
Updating FiveM artifacts with txAdmin or on a rented server
txAdmin is a component of FXServer, so updating the artifact updates txAdmin too. Replace the server files and start FXServer without +exec server.cfg, and txAdmin starts. On ZAP-Hosting you don't touch files: its dashboard has a Versions page with an update button and automatic updates.
What to do when an update breaks your server
If a server breaks after an update, read the console for the failing resource, switch that resource off to confirm it, and go back to the old server folder you kept. Cfx.re supports current builds, so report the problem and plan to update again.
- Read the console. Cfx.re's server issues page (opens in a new tab) says to check the server console for errors or warnings.
- Switch off the suspect resource. ZAP-Hosting's troubleshooting guide (opens in a new tab) suggests disabling an extension temporarily to see if the server stays stable without it.
- Go back. Stop the server, rename the new folder, and rename
server-oldback toserver. If Latest broke it, the Recommended build is the other choice. - Report it. Cfx.re says to report problems with newer artifacts, and you can ask in the Server Discussion forum (opens in a new tab).
## server.cfg# ensure mypack # off while testing: restart and see if the error is goneIf the server won't start at all after the update, these are the causes in Cfx.re's vanilla setup guide and server issues page:
| What you see | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Resources not found, or "Failed to start resource" | You didn't change into the server-data folder before starting. |
| No resources start, and you can't connect (timed out or refused) | The +exec server.cfg part of the command is missing. |
| "No license key was specified" | One of the two mistakes above may apply. |
| The server takes a long time to start on Windows | Microsoft Defender can scan the FXServer files. Cfx.re's server issues page shows how to exclude the folder. |
